This question is an open goal now, no one going to take a shot?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Well I'll talk amongst myself for while... Anna, I saw on BBC Breakfast today that a part of your Principality, viz. part of Pembrokehsire, still celebrate Christmas on 13 January as they remain rooted in pre-1752 times, following the Julian calendar...

Blas is the Welsh word for taste - is this what mercs meant?

Excuse me M'Lud, I submit the BBC have got their facts completely wrong. What is celebrated on January 13th is not Christmas but Hen Galan, or old New Year. The fact is that when the new calendar was introduced they simply decided it was their right to ignore it, and so they did and do so to this day!

                    Cheers mercs

                    Wiki says:

"Alain-René Lesage (6 May 1668 – 17 November 1747; older spelling Le Sage) was a French novelist and playwright. Lesage is best known for his comic novel The Devil upon Two Sticks (1707, Le Diable boiteux), his comedy Turcaret (1709), and his picaresque novel Gil Blas (1715–1735"

So is that it then? Gil?

Seems to be ams, and the Brazilian could be Gilberto Gil, musician who was Minister of Culture?

And I'm guessing the other one is Gil Scott-Heron and The Revolution will not be televised?

                              Seconded!!

                              Well done, team

Yes - Gil Blas is the novel by Lesage

Gilberto Gil is the bossa nova etc star who was Brazil's Minister of Culture

And the recently-deceased Gil Scott Heron was best known for The Revolution will not be Televised

Ammy said Gil first, Anna got two elements.

I'll leave it to you to decide who gets H

Meanwhile: noted re the Welsh festival... But the date is still based on the Julian calendar, n'est-ce pas?

Yes, the Gwaun Valley follows the Julian calendar. I am annoyed if the BBC said it was Christmas that was celebrated and I hope they didn't do so in a smirking manner as if to say "Look at these quaint yokels, aren't they odd with their funny little ways"

Edit: I think Ams gets the H for being first with Gil on mercia's tip off
