... now we're cooking with gas! (The new Music ensemble prefers microwaves.)

I didn't quite get to grips with the Judge - is he a comic book character? and what's with the gun?

I got as far as the inscription on the rifle, I would never have got Snoop Dogg (for nosy hound I was looking for a bloodhound or a famous sniffer dog!)
So we look forward to a Jolly J from mercia!

Never heard of that character either.
That puzzle puts my feeble Harold to shame in its complexity!

What? How? Who? Where? Why? What is the I, and how do the clues work?

I have less understanding of this puzzle than of any on AA hitherto...

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Well Duckie, as far as I understand it the clue is in Alter Ego .......... which results in ........... Oh come on, keep up at the back ......... Basic Freud, innit!

Id would satisfy the I criterion, not Ego... although it means I... Am I being very dense?

oh dear, are we going to have a linguistic argument

                            I'm out of my depth

Well, if you are being dense then so am I, as I assumed the answer was Id !!!!!!!!! We therefor await Ferny's judgement!

                                I cheated a little, Cali.

Ego Tripping is a 2008 Album by rapper, Snoop Dog (= nosey hound)
Alter Ego is the Italian New Music ensemble (one of whose collaboration projects with a group of composers was called "Microwaves")
Judge Holden is a character Cormac McCarthy's novel Blood Meridian - a superb work of literature that also happens to be a "Western". Said Judge calls his rifle "Et in Arcadia Ego" with some degree of irony: the world of the novel is far from arcadian, but the rifle represents Death, anyway.

So, by your leave: a trio of "Ego"s that is the I of the puzzle.
