        Yes please... I thought about Ballade but couldn't get any Cleese connection

        The Zumsteeg one is a shocker:

        Des Pfarrers Tochter von Taubenhain
        The Pastor's Daughter of Taubenhain

        In the pastor's garden at Taubenhain
        there's a sinister stirring by night,
        with sighs and groans and terrible moans
        and rattles and cries in pitiful tones,
        as when hawks gentle ringdoves affright.

        A flickering light on the stagnant pool
        is mournfully glimm'ring and glowing.
        One spot there is on which grass never grew,
        that never is moist with rain or with dew,
        but o'er which a chill wind is blowing.

        She was only a Pastor's daughter
        But she certainly....

        "...the isle is full of noises,
        Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
        Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

          Zumsteeg is spot on. Instead of John Cleese, I could have said "Eric Idle" or "Michael Palin" or "Graham Chapman" or any of that "team".

              Zumsteeg: Des Pfarrers Tochter von Taubenhain;
              Schumann: Romanzen and Balladen;
              Machaut: Je ne cuit pas.

              I must admit the last is bit of a punt. I can only assume it's a line uttered by Basil Fawlty when he discovers his chef is drunk and incapable...?

              EDIT: Scrub that, you're referring to Machaut's ballad Phython, le mervilleus serpent

                  No

                  EDIT: Oh, you're referring to Monty Python's ballad of Oliver Cromwell!
                  No: but bear that in mind as you research Machaut.

                      So; three Ballades by Machaut (Phython, le mervilleus serpent; Clara Schumann and She was only a Parson's Daughter, but she certainly knew how to Curate by Zumsteeg.

                      Rubbers got the lion's share, with Cali and Flay mentioned in dispatches. A rubbery C is keenly anticipated.

                        - a zarzuela from one more famous for a minuet;
                        - part of a Roman Basilica which lends its name to a chamber orchestra;
                        - a tale featuring a certain gentleman's personal gentleman.

                          Clementine / Clementina?

                          Boccherini wrote a famous minuet and a zarzuela called La Clementina, and St Peter's Basilica has a 'Capella Clementina'. Can't find the orchestra or anything to do with the tale featuring &c. &c.

                            But I'm disappointed you didn't get the last. A famous literary creation with whom I am sure Sir is familiar.
