      Syrinx?

        The first of Britten's Six Metamorphoses after Ovid is Pan who played upon Syrinx, his lover turned into a reed;
        Debussy's Syrinx was designed to be played offstage;
        And there's.... er, an asteroid of the same name.

          Correct! There is indeed such an asteroid: - "an Apollo and Mars crosser asteroid." Crosser than Anna when I offended her feminism?

          (Asteroids are always handy when you cannot think of another clue as there are so many!)

            Lovely. But never watch an oboist's face while he is playing!

                Sorry, I'm waiting for the divine wind of inspiration. Might go out and get a curry...

                  A nice n'easy T to connect: a futuristic filmscore, a children's opera, and glorious Haydn.

                              Bliss's 'Things to come' Suite and Haydn's hymn tune 'Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken'. Don't know about the children's opera...

                              Just seen Cloughie's update. I think my answer for element #1 is more likely to be what Rubbers had in mind...
                              "...the isle is full of noises,
                              Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
                              Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                                OK Cal - he never requested any clarification but you could well be right, but I claim it on a majority verdict!
