OK Cal - he never requested any clarification but you could well be right, but I claim it on a majority verdict!
Well ...it makes a change from the customary procedure, I suppose! If majority verdicts are to be allowed as a criterion for the setting of questions, can I request that provision also be made for appeals?

No argument there Mr C - U are very welcome!

do any of the elements of the question begin with U or is it just the link ?

The link in 1 and 3, pt 2 begins with U.

Just seen Cloughie's update. I think my answer for element #1 is more likely to be what Rubbers had in mind...
Things to Come, was indeed the answer to 1. As it appeared to me to be obvious, I didn't press Cloughie to show his hand. If this were a game of poker, I guess you could have raised him in the stakes, Caliban, but then he was holding the Wild card and you'd have lost.

I think he won fair and square

A U to link

A coded American Band Composer
A soprano who has been known to crossover
A difficult to pinpoint sixties vocal group - the U appears in one of their song titles, the writer of which might have been responsible for a wet cake.
