            I turn my back for a few minutes to try and do some work to bring some bread to the table and you lot are already moaning like a flock of hungry gannets, not that gannets moan, mind you, I was just... ok, OK...

              It never ceases to amaze me, how often on this thread the hare is set running, and then the setter pi.....es off into the ether. The other thing that never ceases to amaze me is how little I know eg about 80s pop and 18th century (and earlier) music.

              Sorry Rubbers, you weren't away that long!!!!

                Many would regard that as a positive virtue

                  What M connects

                  * a wildcat composer,

                  * a master of music for a stringed instrument who looks a tad unpleasant,

                  * and a man from a Catalan city with his famous pet?

                      Ferney, I'm sure the pet in question is an ocelot rather than an otter, but I haven't got much further...

                      Still twiddling my moustache.

                        Lovely imaginative replies, fhg, probably better than the clues, but not what I'm looking for I'm afraid.

                        It's the family name of the composer for stringed instruments that looks a tad unpleasant - it you heard it pronounced properly maybe this effect would not occeur to you?

                        The pet is not an otter or an ocelot. In fact in context it is only the pet's owner who mistakes its real identity

                          Thanks, Ammy. I could have been paddling a long way up sh*t creek unless you'd hauled me back

                            ... might it be an anteater?

                                I recall your recent vision of the decadent denizens of Bayswater flânant with ocelots on silken leashes (or similar)

                                "...the isle is full of noises,
                                Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
                                Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
