    Only just read about this development. Interesting to see what changes, if any, ensue.

    Hmm. No mention of LAME, the open source mp3 compatible CODEC. That's been around for yonks and many consider it superior to the 'real thing'.

      However the article is not really about codecs as such, but about licensing.
      The mp3 "standard" allows for many different encoders and ecoders. Some do give better SQ and some work faster etc. but broadly they do much the same thing. The issue here is whether or not any fees have to be paid to Fraunhofer.
