No, it's about no Haydn place.

There is a tendency these days to programme expansive late romantic or early 20th century works in which the conductor can 'show off' in front of a large orchestra at the expense of more intimate smaller scale works. When was the last time we had a Mahler free proms? Surely this is well overdue.

Don't be silly. And don't call me "Shirley".

Just had a trawl through and the last Mahler free proms was 1958. Definitely overdue a break!

                        They wouldn't dare

What about a Beethoven free season ?

I probably shouldn't have said that.

I can still vaguely remember reading a piece about LvB during the 200 year birthday Fest in 1970 to the effect that the best way to remember him would be not to listen to him for a while and then come back refreshed.

Old fashioned it was then already, as the first such proposals and thoughts were heard in 1927 .....

In Peter Gammond's "Bluff Your Way in Music", he said that if the impressarios decided Beethoven was "out", then LvB would be out on his neck. However, PG said that was unlikely to happen as there was still a lot of money to be made out of Beethoven.

That was the kind of reasoning behind Bill Drummond's "No Music Day"
