Judging by the ubiquitous trail, this order has been changed - it implies Job in the first half, and "then" the Alwyn symphony. Anyone have any inside knowledge?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

If this is true,it's quite an honour (deserved IMO)for Alwyn 1 to be the last work on the programme.

Another view would be that it seriously demotes RVW's (arguably) greatest work!

True enough, but it would just be nice once in a while for a neglected British symphony to be the main work in a concert.

Job is RVW's third greatest work, after the 9th symphony and Pilgrim's Progress (only IMVHO of course).

The order hasn't changed on the BBC Radio 3 website. My guess is that it probably confirms my belief that continuity announcers have their brains missing when they make their little speeches. Sometimes these announcements come from people who we know to be highly intelligent and musically perceptive, but perhaps they become self-conscious when reading such insincere gush, and lost the will to live themselves.

Or maybe they do have inside information and the order has been changed.

So what's wrong with the eighth, fhg?

Far too hard for me, but Job and S5 at the top, as mentioned previously.
I like the oboe concerto a lot too.

Setting off Londonwards in half an hour or so.
                    This had better be good!

Avoiding the temptation to say "just about everything", I'll content myself with "Me; that's what's wrong with the Eighth Symphony. In spite of my four recordings (Barbirolli, Boult, Handley and Haitink) and frequent attempts at other performances and recordings, I cannot hear this work as anything other than a collection of individual movements, each with its individual "moment", but lacking the jaw-dropping craftsmanship and intensity of the composer's finest work.)

Still prefer it to the Sea Symphony, but there are other works (by RVW and others) that I find repay my time and attention with far greater effect.

The world's greatest classical music festival - stunning performances and collaborations.

I wonder if that really was the running-order
Yes, that sort of running order was common back then, a neat arrangement so that half the audience could disappear at the interval. Planners are a bit more savvy today.

"Symphony by a Londoner" for me. Faultless, in spite of its faults.

The "Sea" is rising in my estimation on each hearing.

So you are globally warming to it?
