Featuring original tunes from Global's local, that fine Lucy Ward, ' Folie A Deux ' a quite wonderful documentary screened the other night on BBC 4 is an essential I player viewing. We've watched this compelling film twice already !

Thanks Paul - we're only just back in the UK but we'll make a point of watching this.

        She's a decent sort is young Lucy W. - due a Wo3 session I'd say (Oilrig - that's a strong hint)

          Ballake Sissoko tour

The wonderful Ballake Sissoko is on a short tour of the UK.
          Dates & venues here

Highly recommended if you can get there; if not I'm sure that he'll be featured on r3 appropriately (said in a spirit of hope as opposed to certainty)

Nowhere nearby unfortunately, Global; but on the subject of the kora I am loving the link with the Welsh harp on the Finch/Keita 'Clychau Dibon' - and others around me are getting caught up in it too.

"You cannot walk straight when the road bends"

              Gypsy Caravan movie

I'll skirt round the whole Sam-Lee-romanticised-view-of-Gypsies piece & instead focus on two aspects of this remarkable musical documentary - firstly the music and secondly the inspiration of The World Music Institute in putting these 5 Gypsy bands from 4 countries together on a 6 week tour of America.
A case of the whole being greater than the individual pieces - particularly effective not only when performing but spontaneously bursting into song & dance in hotel reception areas, on board planes, and in the sterile carparks of America. Also fascinating as they interact with each other - watch out for the Maharaja and the Flamenco-ist...I'm still stunned by the knees dance.

This is a joyous full-on celebration of [world] music & well worth seeking out - it's on Youtube (with an astoundingly low viewing number of 182):
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

              and here:

Some of the bands performing are well known to us (TARAF DE HAIDOUKS, FANFARE CIOCARLIA) - but the other groups are great too.

Thanks for that, G - I'm enjoying working my way through it.

Meanwhile, can I just put a shout in for Mark Coles in his Shed this week who, in a very fine programme, played a couple of tracks from the forthcoming The Gloaming record - and mighty fine they were too - a couple from that upcoming Angolan comp too and he adds a touch of the Philipino music for very good measure. I like Mark.

Soundcloud. I may have posted about Sohndcloud before - there is quite a body of work on the site, of variable quality and listenability - a preponderance of DJ remixes who presumably tick the 'Yeah it's World Music' button in a vain attempt to gain more attention. I wish there was a way of creating a personalised playlist out of this - maybe there is via the 'follow' button
Link to the World Music section:
Discover and play the top new and trending World tracks on SoundCloud desktop and mobile.

Summary: need to sort out the wheat. Not sure how rich a harvest that will be.

                  The Reggae section
Discover and play the top new and trending Reggae tracks on SoundCloud desktop and mobile.

is a richer seam to explore - hang on, what's Brinsley Forde doing on there?? Anyway its out there, it's free, it more WM than you'll find on r3.

Might slip down to MAC for the Ballake gig. And what's been on here has been the tv ! Loving Matt Berry in The Toast of London ( he also has cds on Spoti ) and we're following and enjoying S4C's Y Gwyll which will be on BBC4 next year.

I'll look out for that Paul! I'm looking forward to Blues America which kicks off next Saturday, though I'm lovin' just watching the trail.

Got to the Ballake Sissoko MAC gig. And realised instantly that I hadn''t been to an arts centre worldy gig in quite some time.
Music was grand as expected and even without added caffieine the main memory will probably be the enforced dancing of some of the audience by the singer.
" Candice Marie meets Bailar Con Los Gorditos " quite bizarre !

Don't forget tonight's Beeb 4 first show of a two-parter 'Blues America' which if the trail is anything to go by should be top-notch.

Following last next week night's enjoyable 'Blues America', I was looking at next week's show and noticed this mighty interesting looking doc that follows part 2 in the schedules - 'In Search of Blind Joe Death'.

Documentary about the legendary guitarist, composer and provocateur John Fahey.

Apart from the odd vid, I'm pretty sure I've never seen anything about John Fahey before on the box.
