I was watching part one of 'Lenny Henry's Caribbean Britain' on BBC 4 last night and particularly enjoyed hearing Benjamin Zephania talk about the influence of Linto Kwesi Johnson on him and on the Caribbean community. This is 'Five Nights Of Bleeding'.

There's been lots of interesting programmes over the last week, centred around the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush in the UK in 1948. However one of the more surprising things I discovered concerned 'I am a Mole (and I Live in a Hole)', a song I used to hear regularly on 'Children's Favourites with Uncle Mac' when I was a kid. I loved those vocal harmonies...still do. What I found out was that the Southlanders were formed in the early 50s in London by Edric Connor and Vernon Nesbeth to perform Jamaican songs and they made a few LPs. Connor and Nesbeth were early arrivals of that Windrush generation that has been so influential in British and World music. Here's that classic of my youth to celebrate a special Caribbean Thursday.

I very much enjoyed Cuba's Ana Carla Mara's piece that was broadcast on 'Womad Planet' on Sunday - she sang this song accompanied only by her cello. Here she is with her quartet playing 'A Tomar Cafe' live at the Europa Jazz Festival...crackin' stuff for this particular Caribbean Thursday.

Creation Rebel have made a return after 40 years. I had a listen to their new record at the weekend and very enjoyable it was too.
