    RIP Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou

Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou has died at the age of 99.
Born on December 12, 1923, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia she joined the Guishen Mariam monastery in Ethiopia’s Wello province at age 19, after the Ethiopian government refused to allow her to study music in London.
She composed for violin, piano, and organ; she found inspiration from classical and liturgical canons along with popular Western styles like blues and ragtime and was a true original.
Her first album came out in 1967, and all proceeds went to young, impoverished people in her community who were seeking an education.
All her subsequent albums were used toraise money for charitable causes, focusing on aid to Ethiopian children orphaned by war.
Guèbrou relocated to the Ethiopian Monastery in Jerusalem in 1984 after the death of her mother, and she remained there for the rest of her life.

In 2007 her family members helped establish the Emahoy Tsege Mariam Music Foundation, which is still active today

There are not many videos of her, although a documentary, Labyrinth of belonging, is being made. Here is the trailer:

Her she is reciting a poem and making a brief appearance.

Sad news indeed, especially for one so near her 100th birthday. Tsegué-Mariam (Emahoy is a courtesy title I think) had a remarkable life, which is outlined in Wikipedia and in the notes to her Éthiopiques recording of her playing a selection of her compositions. Those relating to Christ's passion will be an appropriate tribute from me. I believe that she has made other recordings but they appear not to be generally available. I am particularly disappointed that I was unable to go to London for a concert appearance in 2013.

    RIP

      Yes, Emahoy means "female monk"

This is a very informative page:

Here's a piece that seems to have been released recently - it's certainly arrived on spotty. It is of Sister Gebrou singing 'Quand La Mer Furieuse'.

There is a comprehensive article in edition 193 [ Dec 2023] of Songlines by the ever reliable Robin Denselow on Emahoy:

The Éthiopiques series was the work of Francis Falceto, a French producer married to Emahoy’s niece Jappi Yilma, who had become fascinated by what he calls Ethiopia’s “golden age” of music back in the 60s and early 70s when Addis Ababa was “the African answer to swinging London.”
Emahoy may have become known through the exquisite recordings released through the Éthiopiquesalbum, but this was just a fraction of her work. Along with the albums she recorded in Germany there are home cassettes of her compositions, and also sheet music, some of it for pieces she never recorded.
Also says there is a documentary in the making of her life story.

Glad there is still more to come of this truly unique musician…

In the way that seems to happen with recently deceased, Sister Gebrou has a new album out called Jerusalem. Not listened to it all yet, so more anon…
