... and (whilst I'm in sad git with nothing better to do mode) the timings of the performance on the Phillips "faulty" issue are: 24' 33"; 6' 07"; 6' 17"; 9' 37"; 12' 58".
    On the "corrected" Alto issue (of the same performance): 25' 15"; 6' 21"; 6' 25"; 9' 51"; 13' 18".

    And this might be useful:

Nothing "sad git" about it at all. Far from it...... quite illuminating, and you've clearly answered my query, for which I am grateful.

Exactly. It really does sully the whole experience. In fact, I have one or two BBC Legends CDs and they are not very good at all when it comes to quality of recording, and more particularly - audience noise. Some even comparatively 'recent' ones are not even stereo! They sound a bit like like bootlegs.

And thanks from me too. It would seem that an order for the Alto release needs to be placed

Downloaders might like to know that Mravinsky's pitch-corrected DSCH8 is available from Qobuz:

Listen to unlimited or download Shostakovich: Symphony No. 8 by Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra in Hi-Res quality on Qobuz. Subscription from £10.83/month.

Must investigate these downloads, not from Qobuz but amazon or Spotify?

Boult’s Shostakovich 6 on Everest is stunning . So easy for Boult to be pigeonholed as being a specialist in English music . It is my favourite I think now of recordings of this piece.

I’m not sure that anyone who has heard a lot of Boult would say that - but I take your point as he didn’t do a lot of Shost - that 6th is good as is the Sargent 9th on the same CD if you have the same one as me!

Looking upthread, I see the re-issue of the Mravinsky 8th is discussed and on the Qobuz link it states the release is by "Musical Concepts" I don't subscribe to Qobuz - maybe one day. Meanwhile, I looked on Naxos Music Library (free, via library*) and couldn't find Alto, but did find their releases under "Musical Concepts" including (with PDF booklet) the Mravinsky. Its going to be enjoyable rooting around their catalogue and "trying before I buy" with some of their re-issued recordings already on my mental "wish list".

Just been listening, and most enjoyable. I can't claim to have listened to enough versions to compare, but yes - what range Boult had. His contribution to British music making was enormous......

...Looks like "Musical Concepts" is now the "Parent Label" for Alto.....whose own site hasn't been updated since 2018. Somewhat confusing.
The Alto CDs are still widely available, many at bargain price. The DSCH Alto Reissues are in a 12-CD boxset as well, released 2020.
