A day for Mahlerians and Straussians in London, Sunday 16.11.14

For those within range of Knightsbridge: from 11am this Sunday, a Mahler Society Study Day at the Austrian Cultural Forum, 28 Rutland Gate, London SW7

    entitled

    Mahler and Strauss: Kindred Spirits?

Gustav Mahler Society UK Vice-President, Gavin Plumley will survey the life and works of these two composers in tandem, discussing the parallels between Mahler's Second Symphony and Ein Heldenleben, as well as the composers' poetic choices, philosophical affinities and individual approaches to a world post-Wagner. The final session will look in depth at Strauss's self-acknowledged tribute to Mahler, Eine Alpensinfonie.

Always an intriguing photo, this one (not least showing their relative sizes!):

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Shame it clashes with prior bookings for the London Jazz Festival, otherwise I'd have gone along. Maybe somebody'll film and get onto youtube.
