Thanks so much for mentioning this, which I might have missed. I have duly downloaded and been relishing its delights. Beautifully done and surely indispensable for Hahn fans.

It's a pleasure gurnemanz. I've had much enjoyment from this set.

Tassis Christoyannis does a great job but ideally I would have preferred hearing more than a single singer for 107 melodies.

Schubert. Symphony No.9 in C Major. 'The Great'.

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Maxim Emelyanychev. LINN Records.

Imho, an absolutely outstanding recording, both musically and technically.

I honestly didn't think any recording could displace my love for the classic Boult/LPO disc but this really does!

Beethoven: String Quartets Op. 59 "Razumovsky", Nos 1 & 2

            Quatuor Ébène

A bit like PG and that rather wonderful Schubert "Great" from the SCO and their immensely gifted (but, as I was told on Saturday by one of the SCO's management team, a wee bit unworldly - as in he only brought one shirt with him to serve for three nights of concerts) new principal conductor, this new recording from the equally immensely gifted Ébènes is a joy from start to finish. The first Razumovsky is a desert island work for me - and I'm struggling to think of a finer recording than this one. OK, gush over, it really is exceptional.

How did I miss this? I was mightily impressed with Tassis Christoyannis's surveys of mélodies by Saint-Saëns and Gounod and his contributions to Alpha's release of orchestral songs by Saint-Saëns, so must investigate this. There are so many wonderful Hahn songs which are perfectly suited to his voice.

Sincere thanks for pointing me towards this set.

Probably best known for his Hagen and Hunding in the Solti Ring. Wonderful black as night bass, full of menace. Not sure if you mean not heard him or not heard of him. Surprised either way, though.

Feels like an interrogation or being marked in an exam. Maybe I deserve six of the best or lines. Oh no, not lines!

                          What I mean is:

I have never knowingly come across him before listening to this set this morning - This is the first time I have knowingly heard him sing.

Yes, I've just read he was on the Solti Ring Cycle.

Anyway up - I find his singing to be superb; which is the point I was trying to make.

Yesterday, as it was St Cecilia’s Day, I played Handel’s wonderful Ode to St Cecilia. Trevor Pinnock’s rather good recording.
