Hiya Stan. Apart from the overture, what's the rest of La Forza like?

With Anja Harteros and Jonas Kaufmann in the cast I love their performances and I feel the Martin Kušej staging is excellent too.

Not to be confused with O level science and the Force of Density! I often think with certain operas they must be good if they have such cracking overtures and often I get disappointed because they go on a bit and the tunes are disappointing in comparison to the Ovs! Also I am disappointed when an opera doesn't have a proper overture.

          Berlioz: Overture - Benvenuto Cellini
          Franck: Les Eolides
          Saint-Saens: Piano Concerto No 4*
          Debussy: La Mer

          Robert Casadesus (piano)*
          Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam
          Pierre Monteux

Given in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, on October 12 1939

This is an almost complete concert (the missing item is Dukas' The Sorcerer's Apprentice which ended the evening). The sound on these early CDs from the RCO125 set is surprisingly good and not much tolerance is called for in those I've heard so far.

Apologies for the delay in replying - the new job means that I don't get home until late and by that time, I've had enough!! I should point out that his recording of the Concerto for solo piano is just as incredible!
            Best regards,

Isn't there a Concertgebouw performance from that period of Mahler's 'Das Lied...' where someone in the audience shouts 'Heil Hitler' during a quiet moment? Conducted by Mengelberg, iirc?

Schuricht - Live performance recorded with the CO in the Concertgebouw in October 1939. (I've never heard it, but apparently the "Heil Hitler!" can be clearly heard. Puts Barenboim's post-Elgar speech into proportion.)

Or possibly not quite - instead, a woman walked to the stage whilst Schuricht was conducting, said "Deutscheland uber alles, Herr Schuricht" to the conductor and then walked off. The concert (on 5th October) was broadcast, so her comment was heard more clearly on the radio than by the people in the Hall, and the recording comes from this broadcast.

De pas uitgekomen box met historische opnamen van het Concertgebouworkest documenteert een merkwaardige actie tijdens een concert, vlak na het begin van de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

Many thanks for that. Clearly, my memory was at fault. I'm sure this recording was played many years ago on a programme on Radio3 about concert interruptions.

These details are correct. That very performance is included in the RCO set but it's one I've not caught up with yet. The first half was Mozart Symphony No 34. One of the minor joys of owning this amazing set is that I can go on to the RCO concert archive and check on the full concert details (even the time and - - when the interval was).

Prokofiev. Piano concerto no.2 and Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto no.1.

                          Beartrice Rana, piano.

Antonio Pappano conducting the Orchestra Dell'Accademia Nazionale Di Santa Cecilia.
