    That's another advantage.

More purchases today/recently! (I'm cutting myself some slack though, since it was recently my birthday) I bought the album Richard B recommended over on t'other thread - Ars Memoria | Peter Evans - Being & Becoming | Peter Evans (bandcamp.com) ...except only a digital copy since it costs an arm and a leg to send a CD from the US to the UK. I also ordered the other day Miles's Live-Evil, something I used to own but never got round to replacing - mostly because I would go and listen to The Cellar Door sessions instead, but I decided I'd like all those other songs, and to hear the live jams in the edited and stitched-up forms they appear on Live-Evil. There is also something about hearing it all in the order that it was intended. Anyway, I'm spinning it right now.

Live-Evil must by definition be good: I've had it now for some 50 years and it still offers the same fresh experience on every hearing.

I completely agree. It must have been a complete dream to have seen the band with John McLaughlin at the Cellar Door. I now have the second disk on, loving how John McLaughlin mimics what Keith Jarrett plays... too many wonderful aspects of this music to mention...

I see that there is a new album of recently discovered live material by groups led by Philly Joe Jones that includes the likes of Elmo Hope, John Gilmore, Dizzy Reece, etc amongst the personnel. The audio quality is supposed to be less than perfect but the line up is mouth-watering. Has anyone heard this record yet ?

Is this the album you mentioned, Ian?
Looks a fascinating line-up. Pity if the sound quality is poor.

That is the album. The samples suffer from poor audio quality but you can hear what the musicians are playing. Not sure it would be a disc you would return to and I have heard much worse. Taken from a radio broadcast, it was not possible to remaster the flaws out of the source material.

It does make you wonder what else is out there. A third album of Hassan's newley discovered music was released before christmas albeit it does feature a singer too, When the material captures a musician at the top of their game and recorded by professionals, I am starting to think tha there is sufficient new recordings being released to alter the perspective of a musician. The recent slew of Bill Evans recordings is a good example. I am more intrigued by this than a lot of the newer stuff.

Unsurprisingly I bought this album soon as it came out - The sound quality isn't good but for me its invaluable. Elmo and John Gilmore especially fine on the 3 tracks they are on together, its Philly's band and the sound balance favours him - absolutely wonderful drummer though. The other band has an interesting front line of Bill Hardman and Roland Alexander, Elmo plays on all the tracks but some of the solos are quite brief (but excellent). The tracks are modern jazz standards except Elmo's "Take Twelve".

There is only one track from the album on Youtube is the Philly Joe, John Gilmore, Dizzy Reece, Sonny Red, Elmo and Larry Ridley playing "I can't get started" its mistitled I remember Clifford on the album.

Thanks, Ian & elmo - despite the inferior sound quality will probably order it for the Hope/Gilmore tracks.

The recording quality of the disc sounds like the source is a MW radio with the reception not being too great. It is a real shame as had the record been better quality I would have snapped this up in order to be able to hear Elmo Hope perform in a live environment.. I find it fascinating when these "club" settings become available as they throw a light on the day-to-day lives of these musicians. Elmo Hope was not especially over-recorded. I wish someone would "discover" some more Herbie Nichols.

Just got the latest Hasaan Ibn Ali "Reaching for the stars" Trio, Duo, Solo on the Omnivore label - Only played a few tracks as yet but his work continues to fascinate me, does not sound like any one else, the Ellington Monk school turned out wonderful pianists. Here are two tracks recorded in 1962 with Henry Grimes Bass and Kalil Madi drums also a short vid by Odean Pope recalling Hasaan.

Some surprisingly good vinyl was on display at a jam packed Peckham pay-as-you-enter 1970s/80s household furnishings market today, but way beyond my price range: Cecil Taylor's Conquistador going for £49, and Howard Riley's 1973 trio album Synopsis, for... £117! I could have nabbed Joe Harriott's Abstract or Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch on CD for a fiver each, but my vinyls of these last two are still in good nick.

Steve Lacy, Mal Waldron, Reggie Workman, Andrew Cyrille playing "Monk's Mood" from the newly released 'Mighty Warriors' album. Previously unreleased concert at Antwerp - superb line up I am not aware that this group is recorded elsewhere, best album this year up to now.

I bought my copy of Conquistador from record shop in Lymington about15 years ago for about £5 ! Not been down there for a long while but am sure the shop shut ages ago. It used to amaze me how niche records or performances could be found in these kinds of towns. Last year David Binney appeared in Winchester although there were less than 20 in the audience.

There uSed to ve an excellent record shop in Southsea run by Geoff Ward called Orpheus Records which was exceptional for jazz in the 1980s. I always used to shock the owner by the records I ordered as they because more and more way out. Geoff Ward was a really good bloke. Wondered of Jazzrook knew him ?

The specialist jazz shop in Southampton was called Henry's and I think they closed in the early 90s.

I miss the experience of going to shops to buy my recorded music.

I was intrigued by that record as I love Steve Lacy's playing. i seem to recall Lacy being totally dismissed by Richard Barrett in here several years ago as not being a competent improviser. Looking back to that lime up , my opinion is that it is the absence of genuine jazz like this which makes the current jazz scene so poor. Not sure if I concur with Bruce's observation that the contemporary British jazz scene is on the verge of something significant but would be guessing we would agree that this seemed to be happening on a regular basis with groups like Steve Lacy's back in the 1980s. I am curious about this disc but the review on All About Jazz was suggestive that the music meandered. I would rather accept Elmo's opinion and am tempted. Not bought any jazz for ages....mainly Villa Lobos and Scarlatti these days !

If I wanted to convert Jazzrook to Classical Music I would choose the piano music by Villa Lobos.

I found this review of the above helpful. Another must buy. Thanks, elmo!
