Felix Vieuille, Bass. Sang in the premieres of Debussy's Pelleas et Melisande (as Arkel), Dukas' Ariane et Barbe-bleu (as Bluebeard - the part of Ariane being too high for his range) and Milhaud's Le Pauvre Martelot (as "the Father-in-Law") - a work of which I'd not hitherto heard.

          ah - I didn't read that bit
wiki says Mr Vieuille "created" all those and several other roles. I guess that simply means he happened to sing them at the premieres rather than that they were specifically written for him (?).

anyway - correct in all particulars - well done

we're well on the way to the end of the alphabet

            Thank you.

One of Paul's early Art songs; a piece of Light music; Allegri (Lent to Mozart). Which W?

I think any unsuspecting punter, happening upon this thread, would wonder if they had entered a parallel universe .... Sorry ferney, will look at your obscure W in a mo
Edit: Fallen at first hurdle, I know Mozart pinched Allegri but when it comes to Art Songs, Lieder, well I just do not know anything, let alone who Paul is.

Simply cannot get a W out of this well known story... You are in cryptic mode this weekend, Mr fhg !!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

The Mozart/Allegri story is the "weak link" that gets you to the answer, Cali: when was the work performed?

Can't linger the garden calls via Mrs C, so if I'm right then I pass on the X, Y, Z or A to someone without a garden!
