(popping out between courses) - so a nice easy one -

what C variously might lie behind a composer of melancholy humour, a "multi-talented" fiddle player whose activities extend from divan to dawn to breakfast, and a composer who might have been an orphan or childless?

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Now that was a nice easy one... !

I would be pitifully grateful for a clue.

              Is the melancholy composer Dowland?

ok, a clue or three: all three people share variants of a name beginning with C -

the 'melancholy humour' was a single if varied piece by the composer [not Dowland... ]

the multi-talented person - quite a lot of us here think we hear too much of her...

the orphan or childless composer was a man.

I suppose Clementi could be one, but I have no idea why
                          ditto Clement Jannequin

Clementi is one - think of a darkly humorous work he composed?

not Jannequin. Why did I say orphan or childless - what was he not ?

presumably either not an orphan or not childless
