needless to say I knew none of this before I started googling, and will promptly forget it all too

      Galina Ivanovna Ustvolskaya, 1919-2006, composer.

taught by Dmitri at Leningrad, their 'relationship' apparently fictionalised in the novel Europe Central

      wiki says of her music
Among its characteristics are: the use of repeated, homophonic blocks of sound, which prompted the Dutch critic Elmer Schönberger to call her "the lady with the hammer"; unusual combinations of instruments (such as eight double basses, piano and percussion in her Composition No. 2); considerable use of extreme dynamics (as in her Piano Sonata No. 6); employing groups of instruments in order to introduce tone clusters; and the use of piano or percussion to beat out regular unchanging rhythms (all of her acknowledged works use either piano or percussion, many use both)

Composition No. 1 Dona Nobis Pacem, for piccolo, tuba and piano (1971)

      well done anton

My researches led to Europe Central discussing 'the "imaginary love triangle" between Shostakovich, Roman Karmen, and Elena Konstantinovskaya' ... No mention of the "U" word... (same link as in your answer... how did you get to Ms. U...?)

Good to have you back and on festive form, mercia!

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I think its only the wiki Ustvolskaya page itself that mentions her connection with the book. I haven't read, nor am likely to read, it so I don't know whether these people are mentioned or just alluded to. I think I must have ploughed through a list of Dona Nobis composers to first latch onto the Gal.

very good. I wasn't sure about that last 'fact' - the wiki sentence seemed slightly ambiguous to me.

.... anyway it seems to be your turn again mr anton
