Yes, Brendan Gleeson plays the fiddle and he plays it well.
He also composed the eponymous title song.
I can't find a video of it though.

So instead here are the 2 John Mccormack tracks.

Brilliant film with a great soundtrack and wonderful scenery, G.

I really enjoyed last night's Radio 3 programme that Rhiannon Giddens narrated about Sidney Robertson Cowell, the American song collector and folklorist. One of the most interesting parts of her story was her journey to the Aran Isles in the mid-fifties where she photographed and recorded the local folks. Here's examples of her work from the Irish Traditional Music Archive - https://www.itma.ie/blog/sidney-robe...cowell#samples

John. Wasn't that a perfect setting for G's favourite song? With Heaney as well!

Here's one for crying into your beer.

Padraig, you may recall posting this last month. Yesterday on 'Music Planet' Kathryn Tickell played a track by the two singers involved, Séamus and Caoimhe Uí Fhlatharta - 'Eileanór na Rún'

Just a pedant's corner reply, John. The Irish language treats male and female surnames differently. So, it's Seamus O Flatharta, and Caoimhe Ni Fhlatharta. You'll hear the difference spoken in the introduction in your link. The F is heard in Seamus's surname, but not heard in Caoimhe's.

                The song is lovely.

Thanks for the reminder, Padraig. Just re-listened to the whole album - terrific stuff, but makes me sad that Dennis Cahill is no longer around.
Now watching a live recording of the Quartet - not sure I'd realised what a bass clarinet looked like previously.

I was rather caught out in the car the other night when tuning into the 'BBC Radio 3 Mixtape' - I had always thought of 'Molly Malone' as a sweet wee song that we used to murder in Primary School, all gentle, if sad with that classic line, 'She was a fishmonger and sure 'twas no wonder, for so were her father and mother before' - anyway, I hadn't heard it in a long time but on Wednesday evening it came on, dressed in a full regalia that I didn't know it had, with Bryn Terfel giving it welly, and I felt that it deserved an outing for an Irish Friday.

Molly Malone meets Edwina Guckian, from Dublin up to Leitrim. This is one of my favourite Irish dance videos and Edwina Guckian is a star dancer, teacher and presenter. Watch the play all at once - but it's just as good in scenes.

Sure they wouldn't venture into the wilds of Leitrim. They know their history.

                                'Up the airy mountain
                                Down the rushy glen
