    radio 4 music podcasts

Apologies if this has been posted before but I was looking at radio listings from the weekend and Radio 4 music podcasts were mentioned. Here's the link.

The best of the BBC, with the latest news and sport headlines, weather, TV & radio highlights and much more from across the whole of BBC Online

Old programmes to download about, among other things, Township music from SA, Bob and spirituality, Nina Simone on Great Lives, Syd Barrett, Steve Reich, Lamarr on Memphis Minnie. Something for lots of people.

A favourite of our old pal Lat, formerly of this parish, noticed this programme about Jeff Buckley this morning on Radio 4.

The story of a momentous day during Jeff Buckley's first solo tour of the UK in March 1994

On Radio 4 today Jazzy B and Charles Shaar Murray talking to Matt Parris about Mr James Brown. Most enjoyable.
Soul II Soul's Jazzie B chooses the life of musician and singer James Brown.

          It was indeed.
Intentionally the programme doesn't have any complete performances, so here's a couple of classics to put that right:

          (his band ain't too shabby)

and, because we don't have much hip-hop on here

Composer of the week, festuring Iceland, started with a Bjork track and an almost apologetic 'rock and roll' intro.

I'd Listened Again to this after managing to stay the course for only 2 tracks of 'unlistenable' (pace Mrs JC) Thursday Luscombe.

The last track from the Bedroom Community was intriguing - worthy of further investigation, here's a starting point...

Interview with Alex Gibney about his new Fela movie due to be released later this week. The interview is about 15 mins in. Looking forward to seeing it.

A tantalisingly short programme on r4 about the music of the Mbuti pygmies

Thanks for that G - very interesting indeed that Colin Turnbull - and that music is so special.
...and talking of special, Mark Coles had a very good show this week. Among others he played a couple of tracks from a forthcoming Rough Guide CD - the Rough Guide to Music without Frontiers, supported by an organisation 'Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO)'. MC played a track by Ali Mohammed Birra who I hadn't realised is one of the Oromo people who inhabit an area in Ethiopia, Eritrea and Sudan (I think he said) - I had just assumed he was Ethiopian. He also played a fine Corsican song. The blurb for the forthcoming comp says it celebrates the remarkable and diverse music of the indigenous peoples and minorities living in unrecognised or occupied territories around the world. Anyway it was pretty terrific, though we know that about Mr Birra anyway thanks to your fine Ethiopiques playlist collection, Global.

Thanks jc - I loved the live version of The Wave by Alejandro Escovado, always been a favourite tune, never heard it live before, made even more poignant as he explained the origin of the lyric. an everyday epic story of humanity...

According to Radio Times, next week's Afternoon on 3 ( which has the same kind of content as ever, proms repeats currently ) is to be presented by Verity Sharp. Can we hope for a return to Late Junction ?

r4 programme about Casablanca & what you may call 'the music scene' there...

Worth following the link just for the amazingly poor photo of a bloke looking at a spikey plant. waste of pixels.
And the programme was a bit lightweight too. (don't let me put you off, obv.)

I've heard this very fine song three times on the radio in the last week or so. Then yesterday with the plethora of political leaders swarming around up here, reacting to the weekend polls and telling us how much they loved Scotland and us all , rather than their keys to the ministerial Jag (and our drams) of course, I thought it a most appropriate song for the campaign.
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

I knew Judee Sill as singer of that great earworm, Jesus was a Cross Maker. Most interesting doc on earlier in the week about her repeated this afternoon.
Ruth Barnes explores the music, life and loves of the singer songwriter Judee Sill

Frustratingly small snippets of Ethiopian music, and the Ethiopian restaurant they mention had closed down....and, just out of interest, absolutely not an endorsement of any kind, here is the small specialist supplier of Teff in the UK

Maconie's interviewing Lenny Cohen this Sunday over on 6 - expect to hear a spot of Marianne and tower of song among the stuff about his new record and playful 80+ chat from the Man.
