I don't often catch World Service Global but chanced on some of the programme last night. You reminded me that I thought I'd try to listen to more on LA.

On a different topic I thought you might enjoy this short youtube from a bit of a Sigur Ros film that Master C pointed me towards this weekend. Seems the guy on film is a crony of the band - I liked it a lot though I would have liked to hear the rhubarb stalk instrument.

A fascinating clip, JC. I did think of them on the thread in which Bjork was mentioned - finding Iceland folk artists proved difficult - but because I'd done the Bjork I decided against it. I think, though, there is a link because their music was used extensively for BBC's Planet Earth and probably Human Planet which in turn links in with Music Planet. They seem a bit precious about access rights to the elegant Hoppipolla so here is a cover version and a percussive one that is certainly not their "typical" in which everyone lets their hair down!

Among the metaphorical flowers in his hair? I think it just about qualifies as art given the nature of the music and especially that about turn where they all run along the beach. It adds a bit of perplexing poetry to the commercially flipping obvious. More broadly, the driving of some kind of Woodstock through 21st Century antics in Iceland conveys an odd connection between the traditional and the modern, yes, that possibly couldn't be achieved anywhere else? If one suspects that Attenborough is alongside camera engaging in his fieldwork, no doubt just beyond the lens is a geysir in which elves, ghosts and other huldufolk work to ensure that true Icelandic folk music remains wholly where it is produced.

My own juxtaposition of the piece with a wedding string quartet was a carefully considered contrast between formal married life and wilder youth both of which have virtues.

Jocelyn Pook programme was ok, Jocelyn herself was pleasingly self-deprecating however M. Sweet was repetitive in his questioning and didn't really engage. Kubrick stories were fascinating - and once again Martin Scorsese's dedication to his sound track was shown.

(I never knew that Pie Jesu/Ferrer piece was used in an Orange ad....)

More on Macaskill - The Ridge - Having set the ball rolling, it has taken off like nothing I have ever forwarded, going from person to person. Think it is with half the residents in my road, some of my father's pals, a mate of mine who visited on Sunday, older relatives in Sussex, their 30-something children, the mates of theirs in the same age group, some a bit 'ex rave' and ever onward. I knew it would. Reckon I've watched it more than ten times. For many it is his cycling but the combination with the scenery and that fabulous music gets me every time. I am not just enthusiastic about it but totally ecstatic. If that hasn't won - or doesn't win - masses of awards, the broadcasting 'industry' really has lost the plot:

We did watch the Free Run on the Isle of Man which is advertised on the film as the friend who visited has IoM roots and knew all the spots - I've never seen the IoM so it was interesting for me too - but as a film - commissioned from the same company - I didn't think there was any comparison in the standard. Skye/Bennett/Macaskill is a work of art!

I agree, Lat - it's a perfect combination - the soundtrack makes the film, the film makes the soundtrack. When they made the film, Lat, it was reckoned Danny was the only person in the World who could do that fence jump.

I was trying to have a listen to Colesy's Shed this week to hear if Rickie Lee Jones could out-grump MC but it kept getting interfered in by commercials for some car that even if I could afford I wouldn't want. Anyway I abandoned but not before I had a listen to 'Seydou' from 'Rebirth' by Les Ambassadeurs on the show - a few crackin' tracks on this EP with profits going to the Salif Keita Foundation which I believe supports albinos in West Africa. This is 'Mali Denou'. I love this video - wonderful recreation of the 70s sound from Mali - my French is mighty ropey but I think the runner could be Salif's daughter.

Thanks Global - there's a companion CD with Songlines this month entitled 'West Africa at the British Library, including a terrific 'Jesu Olugbala ni mo For'i Fun E' by Josiah Jess Ransomne Kuti, Fela's Grandfather. Strangely enough it sounds a wee bit Paul Robeson-like. Looks like an interesting show indeed.
