I'm often amazed by Nina Simone especially when I hear something like this, which I had no idea she had recorded, and then you hear the song once again in a different way. I won't spoil it for you about whether it makes an appearance in the programme, Global, but you won't be surprised to know that JB is in there and telling a story that he should have been giving us on his A-Z. Really enjoyable programme. Thanks for the link zola, I would have missed it.

Thanks for the lead, zola. Tis one of my top few favourite songs. Sandy's with the Fairports on Unhalfbricking, and Judy Collins on her album named after the song are by far the two best versions ever. It is easily murdered in the wrong hands and with the wrong voice, as Rufus Wainwright for one has proved. Yes it is an incredibly good song, written by a 19 year old. It is a song I love to hear and love to sing. It requires a simple piano accompaniment or indeed sung unaccompanied. I wish the programme had been more about the song, rather than too much pontification about time.

Agreed, cloughie. Rufus' problem, it seems to me, is that he sings every song like it's the same song. Another person who does this, in my opinion, is the appallingly overrated up here, Eddi Reader, who has taken to murdering the songs of Robert Burns and seeming to get away with it in many people's ears. Awful!

Well yes JC i think you're right. She headlined the Stornaway fest we went to a few years back & we couldn't understand the fuss and reverence. In fact the whole thing was a bit disappointing - as I recall we adjourned to a nearby pub where there was an impromptu gig going on. Better. Avoiding her ever since hasn't been difficult.

Hello my very good long term friends GT and JC.

I haven't been on site for a while.

The GPs felt that I had throat cancer. I have been rounding up all the elements of my life for several weeks. Been there, done that, and farewell. Yesterday, I had to face Croydon for the first time in four years. It felt like an entirely different world and stressful to the point of overwhelming. And from what I gather from the wonderful (Italian) specialist I saw their suspicions have been proven wrong. I have just had in parallel a detailed report from the person I decided to pay to research my Mum's mother's family. I wanted to know more about us if I was on the way out. She has done a fantastic job - - I am so grateful to her and when it arrived I broke down in tears. Exoticism I don't think so after all - but boy are we genuine London. That's rare. Not exactly the easiest time as you will appreciate, I have been keeping my card close to my chest - but anyhow onwards and upwards.

And my genuine apologies if it got a little too political and about issues of separation - I do have opinion there linked to One Worldism but it was also symptomatic. One other thing - I have walked and walked and walked and gardened and gardened and gardened since the worries emerged - 15, 13, 10, and 8 and a lot of colour. I have to admit too that I have gone back into the 1970s (and 1980s) eras of music like never before - the early, the familiar and the reassuring rather than being able to readily access the unusual and the new.

It's been a strange one.

A lot of sadness, some alienation and there would have an element of indifference if I wasn't still sort of responsbile for the happiness of my Mum and Dad a little. As it happens, I got into the waiting room of a good though much maligned urban hospital and went very zombie like not least because of the lack of windows. Mum accompanied me there - I was grateful but felt sorry for her. I didn't realise until 18 months ago that my kind have an average lifespan of 58 years - those who are undiagnosed because it is felt non-diagnosis is better given that they "achieve". Almost normal so call it normal and to hell with the fallout, not that I am bitter, much. I did try for help from the age of 32 and was met with disrespect and dismissal. It hit hard. The objective now is to push from 54 to 60. I won't ask or wish for more. The world has changed too far. I will give you the name of the blonde Italian gentleman who was so charming and sensitive, not least because his name gave me a thrill. Dr Fabio Fanfoni. For the aurally inclined, it doesn't get much better than that!

A footnote - I've gained a bit of inspiration from an unlikely duo who I hitherto didn't take to hugely - Packham, Aspergers diagnosis in middle age, Menieres, and occasionally depressive and Strachan - double mastectomy through breast cancer and so upbeat in her communication with him and nature - a similar generation, I like these people a lot.

I have seen both of them live at Glastonbury. I sort of get JC's point on Eddi Reader. There is also an "overuse of the hands" issue there which my father pointed out. I came at her from an odd angle. Not at all for Fairground Attraction. More positive on the ordinary background and then upbeat on the Boo Hewerdine collaborations, especially Kiteflyers's Hill which is a strong song. Actually, I love it. But, I do find her, dare I say it. middle aged prickly. Rufus is difficult - the sexuality is his and that's fine but it has often been pushed in an am-dram fashion. It doesn't always wholly appeal to all - and he would accept that. The debut album - I think it is the debut album - is in my collection. There are two or three excellent tracks there in the Joel mould not that he would thank me for portraying them in that way. He is, I think, a strong songwriter who deserves to - and may well if he gets his act together - progress. I also think he can be "emotional" live - he was when I saw him - but one might want something else, namely more folk emphasis, given the heritage.
