.......GT, that "Knuckles to the Marrow" by Iarla O'Lionaird is awesome. Very unusual combination of the traditional and the modern and, more strikingly, the rural and the urban. There is something very organic about the piece at its most mechanical. That is rare.

I don't know much about Ra-Ra but his vocal along with with everything else taking place there....well, it makes Cathal Coughlan seem quite tame by comparison. And what a world away from the Afro Celt Sound System!

This is an interesting article about the album, ‘I Could Read the Sky’- http://www.celticcafe.com/archive/Mu...celt/iarla.htm.

I also see from notes elsewhere that his grand aunt was recorded in the distant ether by Alan Lomax. I am assuming that this was her: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StRjC...ature=related. - Lat.

We'd better listen to it... Great title, great music publisher.
Shame about the word 'jazz' in the title though.
        What was 'jazz' again?

            There, that didn't take long ( 3 minutes )
Not a duff track on the whole cd. I think I'll make it my 'Soundtrack Of Summer '11 '
            It's rather wonderful !

Of course Hot Max did play a selection last week.

ok, I've found this album, Polska Rootz, on Spotify.
By a variety of different musicians, it is very modern, but a combination of that modern stuff, played by musicians who are also clearly steeped in Polish folk music. It includes, for example, the Warsaw Village Band, already known quite well to r3 WM listeners.
I have to admit to being won over by that Twinkle Brothers/Trebunie-Tutki track - the most unlikely thing I've heard all year. It works well.

                  Here it is on YouTube
                  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jmXsXs1VQw
                  and, not on the album:

now - does this have a cheering effect?

Cheered me a treat Global - in the face of a midsummer gloomy downpour, it has helped lift that solstician melancholy (along with the Brazilian 'freebie' from those folk at Songlines)

I could certainly imagine R Crumb fitting in very nicely with Pokey and the boys, G - loved the Tiny Desk Concert - a very fine bunch - I shall listen some more. I'm sure Paul must love that.

Opening track from Top of the World 77 is the extremely fine Ethiopian 'Guragigna' by Dub Colossus - a real toe tapper - that wonderful saxophone sound and that amazing language for singing makes for a completely unique sound - here they are doing it at NZ Womad last year.

I saw a sub section of them live in Edinburgh a while back - now that's a fusion combination that's sweet on the ear. They were on after a (or maybe even The) Cuban Choir, tough to follow but they blew them away.

Lovely - do you think this thread will tempt PS out???
