Yes.... just had to switch off my least favourite singing group doing 'The Keel Row'. It's this Music Day thing isn't it... I'd been keeping it at bay. Anton, are you turning out for the scratch performance of the world première of Gareth Malone's Humorous Choral Variations on 'When the Boat Comes In' which is doubtless due to feature on In Tune with Suzy O'Fafferty?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Actually please don't give them ideas.

Why a music day anyway? The Bbc has several dedicated music stations on Multiple platforms, all free to air.

What on earth is the point? To help the demographic that hasn t yet discovered that there is music on the BBC?

They somehow seem to get even dafter in the summer....
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

BBC Four (‘a diverse musical agenda with a commitment to classical and specialist music of many kinds’) is broadcasting popular music from 7.30pm to gone 3am the following morning; Radio 3 is broadcasting Radio 2 for the evening concert.

What fool said 'Music is just music'? 'Music' means 'Music-but-not-classical-music', idiot.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I agree BBC Four is currently falling a long way short of its manifesto to broadcast classical music. In fact, a hell of a lot of its programme would be better suited to One or Three. Anyone remember the shortlived BBC Knowledge? When it started out, we had series like Civilisation; Alistair Cook on America; Bronowski's Ascent of Man as well as showings of the Tippett documentary Songs of Experience passim. That channel didn't last long, and its successor is a sorry parody for a serious arts channel.

My advice is to ditch BBC radio, and R3 in particular, until it sorts itself out.

In Tune'll be even more unbearable today I think.

Yet another "Ascending Lark" this morning (when will they let it rest?) - but later on guest Will Gregory chose some Luciano Berio (Concertino) which was followed by an arrangement of Chantar (Comtessa Beatriz de Dia) - both very interesting and new to me - and some intelligent discussion this time. Looking forward to hearing Berio on Radio 2 sometime!!

I'd especially like to hear a rebroadcast on Radio 3 of the recording of his Sinfonia the composer made with the BBCPO for a Composer of the Week series they did back in the '80s. Berio had a particular affection for the BBCPO.

Yes - there must be some wonderful recordings gathering dust in the archives. (There's a Coro in there, too.)
