I well remember the little lamps used to lift the fog somewhat (while adding to the air pollution) on traffic islands in London as I made my way to school etc.

Fog everywhere. Fog up the river, where it flows among green aits and meadows; fog down the river, where it rolls defiled among the tiers of shipping, and the waterside pollutions of a great (and dirty) city

Heinz Schubert: Hymnic Concerto for soprano, tenor, organ and orchestra (1939)
Erna Berger (soprano), Walter Ludwig (tenor)
        Fritz Heitmann (organ)
        Berliner Philharmoniker
        Wilhelm Furtwängler

Recorded live in the Alte Philharmonie, Berlin on December 6, 7 & 8 1942.

Rather enjoyed this piece included in the Furtwängler Radio Recordings box. This particular Schubert (no relation to Franz) disappeared in the chaos at the end of the war in 1945 and he was never found.

Interesting piece that could be worth a revival.

(last night) Beethoven: Violin Concerto in D op61
          Isabella Faust (violin)
Orchestra Mozart/ Claudio Abbado (recorded 2012)

My favourite violinist in a work I've not listened to for some time. I will play the Berg coupling later today.

Bartok - string quartet no. 4 - Alban Berg Quartett

This increasingly strikes me as an incredible work.

Well-chosen Klemperer classics there, Annie Fischer being oneof his few close friends.

A Beecham concert for me today, November 1959. John Addison's 'Carte Blanche' Beethoven 7, two speeches and three encores.

Yesterday morning as I woke up, my bedside radio was tuned to the Finnish YLE channel which was playing some solo piano music. It was very appealing and I couldn't identify the composer. It turned out to be Smetana's Czech Dances. Having no recording of Smetana's solo piano music in my collection I decided to follow it up. Via Spotify I discovered his complete solo piano music (6 CDs' worth) played by Jan Novotný. Witty and entertaining short pieces. Pleasant, recommendable listening.

I have an Andras Schiff disc of Smetana's polkas, which are more than just polkas, so to speak. A change from the usual 19th-cent. short piano piece.

Looks like that might be more of a blast than the Naxos version I've got:
