György Kurtág, Kafka-Fragmente with Juliane Banse and András Keller. Still the only piece of his I really like. I put it on to remind me what he's capable of after listening to half of his recent opera Fin de partie on Youtube, which some are hailing as a masterpiece but which I got too annoyed with to listen to the end.

4CD box set, in CD order, not numerical symphony order (shock horror to at least one member of this parish!).

The sun has broken through the early-morning mist at last, and S7 is building to its terrific climax.
A happy and rewarding morning's listening project.

        Later:

Rubbra: S2 and S4 (recent Somm release)
Ives: Piano sonata 2, Central Park in the dark, Three places in New England

        Now (just put on):

        Martinu: S4, Tre ricercare, PC4
One of my all-time favourite Sibelius sets... which release is that one, puppet?
I've owned - Royal Classics (OK++), EMI-latterly-Warner remaster (some improvement), Toshiba-EMI (single issues, spectacular!)....some Toshibas (with LP replica covers) might still be out there, but Warner-Badged....

                It was this:

Rubbra: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 4. Somm: SOMMCD0179. Buy CD or download online. BBC Symphony Orchestra, Sir Adrian Boult, Edmund Rubbra

Rubbra himself conducting the world premiere of S4.
                Boult conducting S2.
Not library choices, necessarily, but fascinating nonetheless.

                  This morning's project:

Britten: Complete music for string quartet
                  Endellion String Quartet
A 3CD EMI set, now surplus to requirements, as the same recordings are included in the big Collector's Edition box.

(PM me if you'd like them in your collection: happy to send for the promise of a small donation to a charity of your choice!)

The BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Edward Gardner. An NMC disc I borrowed from the library this afternoon. Interesting music.

The 1964 Monteux/LSO recording of Mother Goose. A remarkably good Philips recording (Walthamstow Town Hall?) to complement sublime playing by the LSO for the beloved Monteux.
