I think it might be useful to keep the CotW Thread separate while the programmes are still available on the i-Player, just in case anyone wishes to make a specific comment on the series, or to reply to a comment on that Thread. I'll do a "splice" once the programmes become "no longer available".

The Fourth Symphony is on Radio 3 this afternoon.

Any new performance is quite an event for me!

Thanks Alison. Will have to catch up on that, as I'll be zooming all afternoon.

It was great having it on pretty loud while doing chores this afternoon!

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I mistakenly mentioned this on the 'Neglected British Composers' thread. To my admittedly untrained ear, it all sounded rather disjointed, as if it couldn't decide in which direction to travel, but I'm sure I shall learn from others' views!

It's a very dark masterpiece, apparently written as a reaction to race riots in London in the late 50s
The work doesn't sound disjointed to my ears,it sort of all makes sense to me although I couldn't explain to you why.
Try MA's own take with the LPO on Lyrita, the slow movement is heartbreaking

                  Really ?

What did they mean - "all possible options for preserving the records have been exhausted"?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I don't really know - there is already an Arnold archive, which would seem to be a 'possible option'. Perhaps they meant options within their own archive, and are trying to minimise archive space. They don't seem to have looked 'outside' very far.
