I'm afraid I can no further in finding a linking D to the above, let along a carefree girl and have to be offline shortly until the morning.

Well you are on the right lines thinking about a character...or rather their role in life.

The carefree girl is Madame Sans-Gêne.

          Blimey, never heard of her!

I imagine her presence will have vinrouge riding by in his literary hacking jacket pretty shortly...

There seem to be operas about all three ladies - but all by different people, none of them a D...

Geneviève pops up in À la recherche du temps perdu, I see, so vinrouge may be positively cantering with excitement...

          More research required...

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Perhaps the ladies are the title of the operas?

Yes - that's what I found - Giordano wrote one, Edward German another, Offenbach another.

              Stumped for the moment.

                Real-life people as well.

I could equally have chosen around another 10 or so operas and the answer would still fit.

Right idea but the wrong gender.

Brabant and Sans-Gene were married to dukes
one of Nell's sons by Charles II became a duke

                        Well done, mercs.

Interestingly all of these were real people.

I must admit only Nell and her citrus fruit were familiar to me

Does this need jazzing up at all ?

Am I having a conversation with myself?

"possibly" would have to be the answer to both those questions
