Er… no. I made an awful fool of myself while the other association thread was going at full tilt. I jumped in forgetting that I’d have to set the next question on this thread (at least I think it was his/her question I jumped at). So I’ve kept out of it but looking at how you go about it, my Googleholic has got t he better of me.

Think of haircut and you shall have D (I’ll be offline for awhile)

I think that's it, now. Mercia also got Thomas Crown Affair, and Doversoul correctly hinted at Elgar's Crown of India.

Wasn't too hard was it? More of an Imperial than a Murraymint, surely? *

                D for Mercia

EDIT:* That was even worse than your Werther's Original joke, Merce

Looking in for illuminating relaxation and amusement after a series of meetings since this morning, and before another one at 3, can I chip in that the above seems to me to be an exemplar of a question - succinct, elegant, musical with a slightly (but not fiendishly) oblique character to two of the clues! A classic instance of the answer being hidden (and not instantly googlable) but once the answer is known, being obvious and provoking a and a " of course!!" (at least in this reader). Bravo rubbers and to the solvers!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

a candidate for deletion if ever there was one

a D to very closely connect

                      - the nephew of an executed pastor
                      - Ah, vous dirai-je, maman
                      - a guest conductor of Opera Leeds

You rob me of words, Caliban. I can't imagine a greater compliment from one 'chap' to another. I feel immediately bounden to entertain your application for silk

well done, Ofca, correct in all respects

what is the difference between a nephew by marriage and any other nephew?
oh yes, of course an uncle who is one's mother's brother or an uncle who is one's mother's brother-in-law
well as I understand it Dietrich Bonhoeffer was Christoph von Dohnanyi's mother's brother

No idea! That was how I read the Wikipedia entry, but then I've always been rubbish at working out family relationships (if you get my drift).

                              Anyway...on to 'E':
One made nearly 300 commercial recordings; one has written or arranged more than 500 film and TV scores; and one is the brother of a tragic heroine.

well I have Ennio Morricone for the 500+ film & tv scores but no other Ennio is coming to light

                                I will persevere
