My classics are a charade, a legal fiction, alas! We need our dear vinsanto for that task. However I will cogitate. (Can I say that, Anna?? )

Yes! (I have 1984, for some reason).

        So, to summarize:

        William Mathias (1934-92), composer of
The Servants, and opera to libretto by Iris Murdoch
Lux Aeterna for soloits, choir and orchestra
Zodiac Trio for Flute, Viola and Harp

... oh, and founder of the St Asaph Festival of Music (hence "festive" in clue), the city in whose Cathedral grounds he is buried.

Another very good, unjustly neglected composer (not even on Naxos!), excellent teacher - and a really nice bloke, too!

Mercia; you got the lion's share of the answers (with Ammie getting the Trio and another work by Mathias): care to Nrich us with the next puzzle?

Yes; it would be appropriate to follow Mathias with one of his compatriots. (I did try to steer Anna towards the right way with the Bangles, but she was having none of it!)

Somehow that just doesn't sound the way I intended!

                      Most kind, I'm sure

What N was a quarter of a tribute to Salzburg’s famous scion, might be seen racing up & down the motorways of Western Europe and wrote a famous song in dim light?

Ooh cars, I thought But your wording sounds cryptic: why just motorways and why just Western Europe..

You tease us, Monsieur l'Amateur, you tease us

Your interpretation leads you astray, Lestrade. You are being too clever, not something of which I have had occasion to accuse you before

[slips out of character] For 'motorways', include autobahnen and other local variants. For Western Europe include the entire EU and probably beyond
