I just wondered whether Elgar's serious friend could be Ernest Newman....

Of the Enigma friends, Nimrod, Basil Nevinson or Winifred Norbury would fit the N.

None seems particularly serious - It was another, Richard Townshend, who wrote a series of 'Tenderfoot' books, so could be series-ous?

I didn't know this. We need someone more obviously "lusty". (Cloughie might get this).

So three Newman: Ernest, Alfred and Randy. I toyed with Cardinal, but the clue seemed to be one of those that gave everything away at once.

Honours equally shared between Norf and mercs: Over to either of you.
