    Hiya Maestro,

You are not wrong! These Brahms piano quartets are not played as often as their quality deserves.

Frederic Rzewski: The People United will never be Defeated!
            Igor Levit (piano)

I listened on headphones in the early hours. I first heard Igor Levit under the selfsame circumstances and was astonished by the maturity and perception of his late Beethoven performances. The same applies to Rzewski. I think I said before that this is the seventh recording of this work in my collection, and it's jumped right to the top of the list (the penultimate 'variation' – Improvisation – is astonishing, but it's the cumulative totality of the experience which is the most impressive).
That this young pianist should have the temerity to record this leviathan at all is remarkable, but in the context of issuing it as just one of a trio of such challenging compositions (with the Goldbergs and the Diabelli as companions) seems foolhardy on the surface but turns out to be a triumphant success.

This Bach/Beethoven/Rzewski compendium is firmly on my shortlist for record of the year.

              Hiya Roehre,

And these orchestrations are not programmed too often either.

Robert Schumann. 'Cello concerto. Oren Shevlin, 'cello. The WDR Sinfonieorchestra, Koln conducted by Heinz Holliger.

Not one of my favourite works but I found this in a charity shop for £2.00 today. It's c/w the 1851 version of the Fourth symphony and got a very good review in Gramophone.

You could have put the £2 towards a Merzbow CD.

They played the finale of #4 this morning on R3, Mariss Jansons & the Oslo. Really enjoyed it. I have that box set somewhere, must dig it up.
