I think that you'll find this work to be from the mid-50s but what a wonderful piece it is! Arguably Carter at his most approachable and, whilst, it's no walk in the park for an orchestra it never ceases to surprise me that it gets so few live performances...

Martinu: Harpsichord concerto, and later La revue de cuisine.

Cheery music to blow the cobwebs away that the storm hasn't managed to do! Windows firmly shut and battened down, even in the relatively unscathed 'south east'.

            Aram Khachaturian - Symphonies 2 and 3

Nowhere near as good as the 1st.

            Order of Preference - 1, 2, 3.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - Symphony No 6 - Pathetique

            Order of Preference - 6, 5, Manfred, 4, 1, 3, 2

Have a very soft spot for Tchaikovsky who is almost one of "my" composers. The slight reluctance to include him in that category is the very obvious popularity of him - it's almost a cliche - and his leaning towards the sugary sweet. But I think I've passed the age of stances of that sort. The music is broad-ranging and - without any shadow of a doubt - great.

A thoroughly Sibelius day. Our Music Group devoted Saturday's session to Sibelius, since this was the closest meeting date to his actual 150th. I hosted our get-together, and went on after the gang left to listen to even more Sibelius.

              Some of today's Sibelian feast:

              Symphony No. 2
              Lemminkäinen Suite
              Violin Concerto
              Piano Quintet
              Finlandia (but of course)
              Peleas & Melisande incidental music
Ten Pieces for Piano op. 24
              Selection of Songs
              'Voces Intimae' String Quartet
              Symphony No. 7

                            Solti's Chicago Sessions.

                            1979.

I will be returning to my "posting links for everything" approach when moving on from symphonies!
