I think that you'll find this work to be from the mid-50s but what a wonderful piece it is! Arguably Carter at his most approachable and, whilst, it's no walk in the park for an orchestra it never ceases to surprise me that it gets so few live performances...

The Variations were completed in 1955 I think. Totally agree, terrific piece & challenging for orchestras.
