Saint-Saëns: Piano Concerto No 2 op.22; Piano Concerto No 5 'Egyptian' op.103 + assorted solo piano pieces
Bertrand Chamayou/Orchestre National de France/Emmanuel Krivine
There have been some fine recent recordings of these concertos (Louis Schwizgebel, for example) but Chamayou (aided by excellent accompaniment from Krivine and an excellent recording) makes the strongest possible case for what I suppose used to be called "warhorses". I hesitate to call them second-rate but the dazzling pianism, accompanied by Chamayou's usual sensitive approach, might convinced one that they were minor masterpieces of the genre. I have a particular fondness for the 5th, dating from my father having an LP with Richter as soloist.
