BBM's post re Goossens on the 'what are you listening to?' thread, has prompted me to play his symphony #2.

I have this Tod Handley 3 CD collection.

Goossens music is underrated and neglected, in my opinion.

      Hiya Beefy,

I have this set too. As you probably know Goossens is yet another Stanford pupil at the RCM. It took me quite a while to warm to Goossens's music, however, I do enjoy playing now it from time to time. I have also really enjoyed the Goossens disc of the 2 violin sonatas on Naxos; well worth discovering.

I am following the Chandos cycle, as you might have seen), and yes Sir Eugene is a most underrated and neglegted composer! He was knighted too!!!

Good morning Stanfordian, no I didn't know he was a pupil of Stanford, and I don't know the Naxox disc, somehow it has escaped my notice.

Listening to symphony #2 last night, I felt that it benefitted from being a live performance.

Currently listening to Goossens' 'Concert Piece For Two Harps, Oboe, Cor Anglais & Orchestra' from the Handley set - wonderful music!

I'm ashamed to say that I don't have any of his music in my collection ,sounds like I'm missing out.

This was my first version of the work. My favourite though is the Lyrita.

Not heard the Naxos, it's supposed to be good.

It's going to be that sort of day, is it?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Very brisk tempi - lightning conductor (sorry).

The best version, imo, of the Symphony in G minor.

to know all of the music some folks round here do, ER, you need the lifespan of an Old Testament close relative of Abraham, the pockets of Bill Gates richer older bother, and the attention span of a crack team of elite chess players.
Though I have no doubt you are well on the way.......
