Having had time to catch up, it seems clear to me that the L ought to fall to the returned prodigal, Tapiola. He appears to be offline. For how long, I wonder..

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

With apologies to the errant Tapiola, and on an undertaking to hand him a letter at some later stage upon request, I have an L to keep things going.

An L then, linking a poacher, a cobbler and a pair of riflemen.

I've found a Lincolnshire poacher and a Lincolnshire cobber - should I chase the Lincolnshire sharpshooters?

Good day, ammy.... nah.... wrong country, I'm afraid. The cobbler is a reasonable familiar figure

Well I can only think of Hans Sachs and Charles Laughton and John Mills

                        How so?

You are right with Hans Sachs... but not Wagner... Keep ferreting!!

Anna my granny used to talk about Chu Chin Chow... I must have a look why it's relevant to cobblers!

It has The Cobbler's Song in it ... I've never heard it but I honestly thought Ammy was getting there with the John Mills, etc., and the answer was a filmic one.

Oh thanks! I was waylaid by vinteuil's phobia of tee-shirts!!

You are looking for the surname of a composer who wrote works about all the characters set out in the question
