William was a sheer guess and I initially said William Mathias because we seem to have had a lot of Welsh references lately! But I couldn't see anything in the plot of The Servant to link with Solomon which is why I didn't mention that title.

I can't offhand think of an X,Y or Z so I could do an A, but I'm easy (ooh, she's Bold) as to who goes next plus I have to be offline in 15 mins for an hour. Edit: cross posted with mercia, go ahead with your Z. Double edit: Thanks for those links also mercs, I'll explore them later. I shall have to ask my greengrocer if he has any purple carrots as well!

Very true.... but I had hoped the reference to "servants" in my puzzle might point to Mathias's "The Servants" ....

my silly Z but I'd rather have an Anna A

          Z connecting

Liu (operatically), some archlute sonatas and ice-rink cleaning

                So

                Solomon - Boyce.... Anna
                Fairy Fiddler - Alwyn... Cloughie
                The Servants - Mathias... Mercia

                All Williams.
Cali, being criptical of your clue - the way you put it suggested that Solomon was linked to all three composers - misleading?

so do we take it that the House of Orange is named after the colour of carrots ? or did I misunderstand that section
I wondered about this point and decided that they must have said that the orange carrot was developed for supporters of the House of Orange?

(I think mercia that your Z is very obscure, but I may have an inkling)

I think it might possibly be Zamboni? Maria Z was an opera singer who sang Liu in Turandot, Giovanni Z was a musician who composed for the archlute and Frank Z developed ice rink surfacing, cleaning.

hurrah! - we can look forward to an Anna A

Maria Z was the first Liu in Puccini's Turandot
Giovanni Z composed a set of eleven archlute sonatas
and here's an ice resurfacer, though whether it's a Zamboni, I wouldn't like to say

That was indeed a funny Z mercia and I have completely forgotten the original A I had thought of before I had to rush away, so here goes with a different one, should be relatively straightforward:

                            Which A links these three?
                            Dufay in a cellar?
                            Wilbye and his girl;
But Beethoven’s had a happy ending.

Oh did it? I didn't intend to and don't think it did... Just tried to invent a FEARFULLY cryptic sentence incorporating the three elements...

If anyone feels misled however, I abase myself and apologise

Did you see 'Tale of Two Cities'?

Did anyone else already know (maybe everyone did except me ) that 'hotbeds' involved a layer of manure underneath the topsoil, fermenting and growing warm and hence boosting plant growth as well as nourishing the plants?
