    Bargains

Can't see that we have a bargains thread. I've just noticed this, which strikes me as a rather good deal:

No matter how many times I try, I can't access this web link.

If I'm not mistaken it's because the URL is an https and the board software can't deal with those. Anyone know for sure?

You're right. Delete the https and you get through:

And what a bargain that is. I'm sorely tempted.

Ah, that's better. Yes, it's an excellent bargain.

But I suppose Brilliant Classics have the monopoly in this area.

Thanks, Don Petter, for improving the link.

Brilliant Classics are great and reliable, but there have been some incredible amazon deals recently: the DG Bernstein Mahler set for £15.97 just before Christmas and the EMI Messiean box set for about a pound less, to name but two.

Pleasure - it was Mahlerei who pointed the way.

It does look quite a bargain, but I'd probably rarely play them. I have the Stravinsky by Stravinsky set which gets aired all too seldom.

I was given the 22 CD Stravinsky set as a present a couple of years ago: it's a good set to dip into, but I'm not sure even I have listened to all the whole thing.

The appeal of the Boulez box is partly in the selection (a good mix of 'pop' Stravinsky and some of his lesser known or celebrated pieces) and partly in the up to date sound, though I have no problems with the sound of the Columbia set, either.

Rattle complete Mahler is cheap from Amazon just now (£22) plus Jansons complete Shostakovich (£18)

This thread is a boon to me already as I have now ordered the Boulez Stravinsky set, of whose existence I was unaware. Thanks, Mandryka. You deserve Arabella.

No doubt my bank balance would go down further did I not already own the 22-CD Stravinsky set and most of Rattle's Mahler discs. I will give Jansons's Shostakovich a miss as I already have three complete sets!

I suspect I paid more in total for the Mahler / Rattle 2, 7, 8 and 10 I already had than the box is costing me.

However I have a colleague who will appreciate the duplicates.
